Prayer is the foundation of every Catholic's relationship with God. But if you're new to the faith — or returning after years away — the sheer variety of Catholic prayers can feel overwhelming. Where do you start?
Here are ten essential prayers that form the backbone of Catholic devotional life.
1. The Sign of the Cross
The most basic Catholic prayer, and the one you'll use most often. It's both a prayer and a profession of faith in the Holy Trinity.
In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
2. The Our Father (Lord's Prayer)
Taught by Jesus himself (Matthew 6:9-13), this is the most important prayer in Christianity. Every Catholic should know it by heart.
3. The Hail Mary
The most distinctly Catholic prayer, drawn from Scripture (Luke 1:28, 42) and tradition. It's the building block of the Rosary and a beautiful way to ask for Mary's intercession.
4. The Glory Be
A short prayer of praise to the Holy Trinity, often used to conclude decades of the Rosary and at the end of psalms.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.
5. The Apostles' Creed
A summary of the core beliefs of Christianity. Reciting the Creed is a powerful way to reaffirm what you believe and why.
6. The Act of Contrition
Used during the Sacrament of Reconciliation (Confession), this prayer expresses sorrow for sins and a commitment to change. Having it memorized makes the sacrament less daunting.
7. The Rosary
The Rosary is one of the most powerful and beloved Catholic devotions. It involves meditating on the mysteries of Christ's life while reciting the Our Father, Hail Mary, and Glory Be. Start with one decade (ten Hail Marys) and build from there.
8. Grace Before Meals
A simple prayer of thanksgiving before eating. It takes ten seconds and transforms an ordinary meal into an act of gratitude.
Bless us, O Lord, and these Thy gifts, which we are about to receive from Thy bounty, through Christ our Lord. Amen.
9. The Guardian Angel Prayer
Traditionally taught to Catholic children, this prayer acknowledges the protection of your guardian angel — a belief rooted in Scripture and Church teaching.
10. The Memorare
A beautiful prayer to the Blessed Virgin Mary, attributed to St. Bernard of Clairvaux. It's a powerful prayer to turn to in times of need.
Building a Prayer Practice
You don't need to memorize all ten at once. Start with one or two that resonate with you and add more over time. The Kairos app includes guided prayer content that introduces these prayers in context, helping you understand not just the words but the meaning behind them.
The most important thing about prayer isn't getting the words perfect — it's showing up. Even a few minutes of daily prayer can transform your relationship with God.
